Midthunder belongs to the Fort Peck Assiniboine Tribe of Fort Peck. Her mother was a castor and she studied at the Academy for Technology and the Classics in Santa Fe. She was raised on the Navajo Nation, in Shiprock. Amber has been identified as Native American on her father's family, and they are both registered members of the Fort Peck Sioux Tribe. Amber's mother is adopted which means that Amber is of unknown mix ancestry.
